Unemployment - Claiming its 22nd Month! Don't be Discouraged!

CNN reported today that the unemployment rate rose above 10% for the first time since 1983! Statistics like these have many wondering if not hoping and praying for improvement just around the corner. However, many Americans simply can't wait for corners – which has left many feeling hopeless

CNN also reported a net loss of 190,000 jobs in October, according to the Labor Department - an improvement from a revised estimate of 219,000 job losses in September. However, economists surveyed a loss of only 175,000 jobs in October. This was the 22nd straight month of job losses.

So what can we do?

For the Unemployed I suggest:

• Marketing your hobbies or special skills – it may earn you some extra $$
• Think outside the box
• Social networking is the newest job tool. Learn how to market yourself via social platforms. Most employers are active on such platforms
• Learn who your potential employers are following/interacting with. You want to become a part of these social conversations. If you can’t be in their direct vision you at least want to be peripheral
• Look into government programs designed for the unemployed. Many city organizations will hold informational sessions for resume building and career development
• Make your own website. This can function as an electronic resume, encompassing your applicable skills and portfolio work. There are a number of FREE website programs available to anyone


For the Employed I suggest:

The rise of this economic decline will define us as a Nation. So GET INVOLVED!! I cannot stress this enough.

• Donate your time to local soup kitchens
• Volunteer at local non-profits such as Big Brothers Big Sisters
• Aid others in resume writing
• Unemployment can be discouraging - Offer recommendations and encouragement to those around you who are unemployed, you may brighten a day
• Get involved in local causes
• Think with your heart, these are desperate times – we could use a little compassion
